Ebook About
What is it about the top tech product companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Netflix and Tesla that enables their record of consistent innovation?   Most people think it’s because these companies are somehow able to find and attract a level of talent that makes this innovation possible. But the real advantage these companies have is not so much who they hire, but rather how they enable their people to work together to solve hard problems and create extraordinary products.  As legendary Silicon Valley coach--and coach to the founders of several of today’s leading tech companies--Bill Campbell said, “Leadership is about recognizing that there's a greatness in everyone, and your job is to create an environment where that greatness can emerge.”  The goal of EMPOWERED is to provide you, as a leader of product management, product design, or engineering, with everything you’ll need to create just such an environment.  As partners at The Silicon Valley Product Group, Marty Cagan and Chris Jones have long worked to reveal the best practices of the most consistently innovative companies in the world. A natural companion to the bestseller INSPIRED, EMPOWERED tackles head-on the reason why most companies fail to truly leverage the potential of their people to innovate: product leadership.  The book covers: what it means to be an empowered product team, and how this is different from the “feature teams” used by most companies to build technology products recruiting and coaching the members of product teams, first to competence, and then to reach their potential creating an inspiring product vision along with an insights-driven product strategy translating that strategy into action by empowering teams with specific objectives—problems to solve—rather than features to build redefining the relationship of the product teams to the rest of the company detailing the changes necessary to effectively and successfully transform your organization to truly empowered product teams EMPOWERED puts decades of lessons learned from the best leaders of the top technology companies in your hand as a guide. It shows you how to become the leader your team and company needs to not only survive but thrive.

Book EMPOWERED: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Products (Silicon Valley Product Group) Review :

I love the first book "Inspired" and that's why I bought this book. But I am disappointed at how much overlap there is between these two books. And there is too much repetition in this book talking about how important it is to have empowered product teams. What I found helpful could have been covered in perhaps 80 pages instead of the 400 pages the book has. Here is my take on each section of the book, and I hope this is helpful to you.Part I Lessons from top tech companies- Nothing concrete in this sectionPart II Coaching- It mostly talks about the importance of the various aspects of coaching, but in terms of how to become better at each one of them, I got very little out of this book. You are much better off reading "High Output Management" instead.Part III Staffing- Nothing new here, if you have read a book on how to hire and develop employees (again better off reading "High Output Management."Part IV Product Vision and Principles- This one talks about how important it is to create a product vision and using visiontype is a good one to do that (again, nothing concrete)Part V Team Topology- How to structure product teams. If you've read "Inspired", this is pretty much a repeat or revision of what you already know.Part VI Product Strategy- The key takeaway here is that product strategy should be focused, driven by insights and composed of key problems to solve to achieve the business goals. It doesn't tell you how to come up with product strategy btw.Part VII Team objectives- The key takeaway here is that objectives are key problems to solve, and the product leaders are supposed to allocate these objectives across the different product teams (it should be done through conversations with the product teams of course). And the product teams are supposed to come up with the key results, not the product leaders.Part VII Case Study- This is probably the most interesting part of this book. It's also interesting for me personally because I am 99% certain about the name of the jobs marketplace company that's featured here (I have worked in this space).Part IX and Part X- Repeat of what's mentioned in earlier parts of this book as well as "Inspired"
It’s excellent, as I expected. When I read the precursor, INSPIRED, it made a huge impact on my thinking as a product designer. This book gets into leadership and creating conditions where great design and product creation can happen, so that people can do their best work. It contains some tough talk for companies that are parroting some of the right words (agile, etc) while placing harmful and arbitrary limits on the teams. If you’re in a position of any authority you should definitely read it — and even if not, read it and recommend it so you can be influential.
