As someone who, no joke, had her entire life changed by The Feeling Good Handbook, I was VERY excited to read Feeling Great. Dr. Burns’s methods are incredibly powerful, and I use them continually. Would Feeling Great offer me even more ways to untwist my thinking and find relief from negative emotions?Yes—with a caveat. What Feeling Great brings to the table that previous Burns books largely don’t is the importance of assessing the positive aspects of distorted thoughts. I’ve been experimenting with this since reading the book, and I’ve quickly become a big fan of it. Taking the time to understand the positive functions/aspects of my negative emotions helps lower those emotions considerably. This is a huge gain, and I’m very grateful for it.Here’s the caveat: Most of the rest of Feeling Great feels like a reprise of The Feeling Good Handbook. The list of cognitive distortions hasn’t changed, the ways to untwist your thinking haven’t changed, his opinions regarding antidepressant medication haven’t changed, etc. So if you are just beginning your CBT journey, I would recommend starting with Feeling Great and skipping The Feeling Good Handbook. And if you’re like me and are already familiar with The Feeling Good Handbook, I would still recommend reading at least the new material in Feeling Great. (And looking at the cat photo on page 412.)Frankly, if you deal with depression, anxiety, or relationship problems, the most important thing is to just pick up ANY of Dr. Burns’s books and go from there!
For people who experience occasional sadness or anxious thoughts this book may be helpful. Be warned: it seems to be a throwback to era of the Power of Positive Thinking. The cognitive behavioral therapy method proposed by David Burns is nothing transformational, but again, useful for the uninitiated. People suffering from clinical depression and severe anxiety are generally not able to analyze their own painful thoughts to identify distorted thinking and reframe their perceptions, which is the basis of this author’s approach. They would if they could. The author gives scant attention to brain functioning or neurophysiology. With a copyright date of 2020 I expected far more information on recent advances in brain imaging and mapping of neural pathways. Current research indicates that mental disorders are medical illnesses with genetic links and physiological roots. This author dismisses current research and essentially blames external factors for distorted thinking. He dismisses the role of neurotransmitters in mood disorders, citing one veteran’s hospital study conducted in 1975. This book is not for those looking for up-to-date approaches for the care of people suffering from clinical depression and/or anxiety.
